Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, the designated Minister of Health, has revealed that about 13 districts have yet to offer government land for the construction of district hospitals across the country.

This, he said, had largely contributed to delays in these hospitals’ construction.

That was the vision of the President [building hospitals] that was supposed to be translated into action. He formed a presidential committee headed by the Chief of Staff. I’ve been a participant. We’ve taken out one or two of our ministry’s infrastructure. There was also a representation from the Health Service of Ghana.

What they wanted us to do immediately was to write to all the health care district directors to assign property and give us the site plans where these district hospitals would like to be built. “We still have about 13 districts, as I speak, that have not completed this exercise,” said Mr. Agyeman-Manu.

President Nana Akufo-Addo proposed the development of hospitals in some 88 districts across the nation in 2020 to improve government efforts to contain COVID-19.

There are 88 districts without district hospitals in our country; we have six (6) new districts without regional hospitals; we do not have five federal infectious disease control centers.

And for diseases such as COVD-19, we do not have adequate research and isolation centres.

“We desperately need to do something about this. That is why the government has agreed to make a massive investment, the biggest in our history, in our healthcare system. We will start building 88 hospitals in the districts without hospitals this year,” the President said.

However, as promised by the President, the building of these hospitals has not begun.

During his screening by the Appointments Committee in Parliament today, Wednesday, February 10, 2021, the Health Minister-designate said the government is working tirelessly to ensure that construction starts this year.
